GET TO KNOW ME

I'm an Electronic engineer working on TORi NIXIE CALCULATOR for more than 2 years, I started with a flat plastic enclosure design and proceed to improve the enclosure design and electronic card till I got to this walnut with oiled coating design.
I'm very excited to present you with this first Nixie Calculator (the first Nixie calc from the 70's)

My Story

Hi, I'm Ohad Harel.

Nice to meet you!

My story begins back when I was a kid.

I was always intrigued to understand how electronic devices work.

It was clear to me that my future will be in the field of electronics, and indeed it has been 15 years now that I have been an electronics engineer.

The first time I came across Nixie tubes was 7 years ago while looking on the internet for Audio Amplifier tubes.

Well, one of the images that came up in the search was an IN-18 Nixie tube.

I was amazed!

I started my first Nixie Project - Creating a Clock with IN-16 Nixie tubes.

This clock is still in my son's room.

Soon after, I created one more clock with IN-18 40mm tubes - the biggest Nixie tube you can find!

This clock has been decorating our living room for 6 years now.

Over the years I had to replace one of the tubes, but this is expected for a 50-year-old tube...

These clock projects were very successful, but I realized that there are a lot of Nixie clock makers and that I want to try to make something a little different.

A calculator!

Well back in the 60's and 70's there were amazing designs of Nixie based Calculators,

but when the LEDs came into our lives Nixie tubes were left behind.

I decided I must create such a calculator, but to get started I had to make some decisions...

What will be the design?
From what material? Metal? Wood?
Should I try to create the calculator case myself or get help from an outside source?
What size and model should the tubes be?
Which processor to use in my electric board?

Even though I didn’t have all the answers - I started working!

And after two years of work, which included 5 electronic board design (PCB’s) and 3 different case designs I have created the finished product that you see on this site.

It is perfect.
It looks Retro, it looks Modern - it is exactly how i wanted it to look.

The only question remained unresolved was - What should be the name of the calculator?

TORI Design.

TORI is the combination of my family members names:
Tal (my youngest son)
Ohad (me)
Roni (my wife)
Itamar (my eldest son)

This is a tribute to my family who supported me along the way!
